CS Hellman Returns with Gloomy Jewel ‘Burned Romances’

It’s been a while since we hosted CS Hellman on our pages. It was 2023, to be exact. We vividly remember the Nashville-based creative’s fierce rock imprint, a sound that was energetic yet relatable and popular. Fast forward to today, and we have to reckon with change; CS Hellman is not who he used to be, he’s endured a – perhaps inevitable – transformation that takes him into darkwave and postpunk territories. ‘Burned Romances’ is the perfect example of that.

Drenched in a mysteriously dark aura, the single moves with heightened melancholia and a stream of noisy atmospheric textures, sparking an introspective, expansive and otherworldly listening experience. The production behind ‘Burned Romances’ is quite notable. Blending organic instruments and electronic elements, CS Hellman fully delves into his most alternative, niche side, a change that fully reflects the gloomy reality around him.

Teaming up once again with Jared Corder and his assistant engineer, Kriss Jedd, at Polychrome Ranch studio, Hellman found himself greatly inspired by Philadelphia group The War on Drugs, together with the likes of Peter Gabriel and David Bowie, helping give the overall record a nostalgic feel. Speaking about the songwriting process, Hellman explains: “Most of the lyrics came from a stream-of-consciousness moment; scribbled down in the notepads I keep with me at home and work. That’s usually how I start forming a lyrical concept.”
