We were writing about Crooked Cranes just over a month ago, celebrating a playful and rowdy EP we described as “certainly not a product of deep reflections or heavy themes. It’s perhaps a quality: sometimes, it’s good to just vibe to the distorted sound of a guitar.” Well, it looks like the North Carolina-based outfit is sticking by their guns, returning with a charming and rebellious Queens of the Stone Age cover, ‘Gonna Leave You’.
Taken from QOTSA’s 2022 album ‘Songs for the Deaf’, ‘Gonna Leave You’ perfectly fits Crooked Cranes’ artistic ethos. Built upon fuzzy distortions, otherworldly vocals and rolling drum grooves, the piece is here interpreted in a rather soft manner, with guitars staying out of trouble and letting vocals dominate the record. This showcases Crooked Cranes’ artistic maturity and their development over the past year or so. There’s a fine balance between rock’n’roll chaos and songwriting flair, allowing for an intense, yet measured listening experience.
Hailing from the town of Fuquay Varina, Crooked Cranes feature Josh Faw, Dylan Hornaday, Andrew Bateman, and Addison Faw. Inspired by the likes of Dinosaur Jr., Built to Spill, The White Stripes, and The Who, the group aims to build “their own distinctive sound”, a goal they appear well on their way to achieving.
