Courtney Nord Shares Poignant Gem ‘Wasteland’

When approaching Courtney Nord, one must be ready to enter her peculiar, personal and intensive artistic universe. She’s what you’d call an ‘inspired creative’. Pursuing a very clear style, the L.A. resident knows exactly where she’s travelling to. The destination is made up of haunting, dark and introspective sonic material, channelling indie electronica and fuzzy tones to complement her gritty and luscious vocals. After winning the Chicago Indie Film Award for Best Music Video in January 2022 – the song was ‘Nostalgia in Wonderland’ – the talented upcomer set out to convert even more listeners to her cause.

Naturally, Courtney Nord returns this month with the first release of the year, and it’s pretty glorious. ‘Wasteland’ explores slightly different musical horizons, perhaps steering towards the mainstream a tad more. Not to worry, we always get Nord’s signature vibes: a euphoric sense of poignancy, a heightened state of emotional awareness. Produced by fellow creative Adam Teller, the record is the product of a bleak period in Courtney’s life.

As she explains, the song was heavily influenced by her mood at the time. She admits to feeling deeply depressed and struggling to find the motivation to create. However, she was able to channel her frustrations into her artistry, which then brought us ‘Wasteland’. Lyrically, the song touches on the theme of giving up on something and returning to a source of comfort, even if it may not be the healthiest option. It is a relatable sentiment that is sure to resonate with many listeners.
