Cogley is very clear about the purposeful ethos that commands his musical journey. In fact, he has a whole section on his website dedicated to narrating such a story. It’s a rather touching tale, one that communicates how music has and art-making has always been a silent companion for the British-born, US-based troubadour. Juggling his successful engineering day job career, he was able to keep the flame of creativity alive. That very same flame is what today brings us ‘Deep Blue Sky’, Cogley’s latest offering.
The core of the album was originally released in 2022; at the time, the world was emerging from Covid and from a truly tumultuous political landscape, so much so that Paul (the human behind the project) felt the need to compile a collection of song he describes as “a guidebook on how to redeem yourself in this crazy world where we have all lost the plot a little.” That makes a lot of sense, and it is certainly even more relevant today, as the world is slowly entering a massive collective black hole.
The reason why Cogley is now sharing a new version of that album is that he mainly wanted it to be on vinyl. To accommodate that, the format had to be adjusted, with four more songs added and a lush remaster from notable sound engineer Robert L Smith. The result is a triumphant double vinyl album, which brings renewed attention to ‘Deep Blue Sky’. In it, one can truly reckon with Cogley’s lucid, observant songwriting allure, alongside his nostalgic aural flair.
