Clay Goodman fooled us. Despite the project’s aesthetic being quite quirky and casual, the actual music is rather good and expansive, a slice of shoegaze-flavoured pop-punk goodness that feels nostalgic yet contemporary. The contrast between Goodman’s down-to-earth visual ethos and his roaring, electrifying aural energy is indeed a quality that’s pretty common in the alternative/lo-fi scene nowadays. It’s refreshing, with Clay offering his true self to anyone willing to listen.
Driving a strongly DIY endeavour, Goodman has recently unveiled his third single to date, ‘Such Fun’, the perfect evidence of the project’s aforementioned allure. We particularly love its noisy and jagged guitar distortions, dominating the track while leaving ample space for Clay’s hazy, feverish vocals. The lyricism is obscure and introspective, and with a high degree of relatability. Honestly, this piece is pure escapism – a record you can lose yourself in.
Delving deeper into the inspiration behind ‘Such Fun’, Clay explains: “It was the first song I ever wrote. I was young at the time and just writing every day. I wasn’t happy with a lot of my songs until this one. I’d say my relationship and friendship at the time had a lot to do with it. I was young and broke, working my first job ever at a clothing store.” We love it; a song drenched in nostalgia and real struggles, a piece born of Goodman’s need for artistic catharsis.
