Clay Goodman Delves Into Nostalgia with Power-Pop Gem ‘Heartbreak (The One That You Need)’

A playful and nostalgic blend between indie influences and retro power-pop prowess, ‘Heartbreak (The One That You Need)’ sees talented American troubadour Clay Goodman indulging in catchy melodies and fuzzy guitars, all treated in a quirky and cool lo-fi goo that feels vibrant and timeless.

Hailing from Virginia, Goodman could perhaps be described as an old-school stan, constantly borrowing musical elements from the greats, then working them into a respectful modern package. Despite his longstanding commitment to songwriting, Clay started to share his material only this year, showcasing a certain eclecticism in the process. Take, for instance, the indie-rock belter ‘Such Fun’ and the evocative, acoustic ballad ‘Hello’. Yet, even among such contrasting forces, one can trace a common thread in Goodman’s introspective, observant lyricism and slick vocals.

‘Heartbreak (The One That You Need)’ is a true DIY effort, with Goodman taking care of performing and recording all instruments. Delving deeper behind the song, he explains: “It is written about someone heartbroken from a relationship ending, but not letting the pain they feel lead to negative feelings like hate and also it has a confidence in the ‘I’m the one that you need’ angle”. Inspired by The Beatles, Clay put pen to paper after attending a Ringo Starr show in 2023.
