‘All The Light We Dim’ marks our point of entry into Charlie Uffelman’s artistic universe. It’s a wholesome, eclectic place, a sonically rich, relatable dimension steeped in honest songwriting and lyrical nostalgia. Written against the backdrop of intense personal changes and societal turmoil, ‘All The Light We Dim’ seems to embrace a gentle, evocative ethos, looking at the gloomy reality around us all with understanding and fleeting hope. Uffelman’s smoky, earthy vocal tone is the perfect match for such a vibrant formula.
From a production standpoint, ‘All The Light We Dim’ embraces a wide range of guitar-based goodness, ranging from stripped-back folk-leaning pieces to rowdy rock’n’roll excursions. We have to admit, we prefer Charlie in his ‘poignant’ mode, with episodes such as ‘Everything’ being some of our favourite moments on the album. That said, ‘All The Light We Dim’ will certainly resonate with people in different ways; what matters is how good the record is.
Delving deeper into the album, Uffelman explains: “The majority of this album was written in the second half of 2024, fueled by election anxiety, the realisation that I would be graduating college in December, and an attempt to figure out what the next stages of my life would look like amid so much uncertainty. These songs are examinations and meditations on what I want out of life for myself, my loved ones, and my fellow citizens.”
