What do you do when you’re growing up in a messed up world? How do you express that rage, that confusion, all the disillusionment of adulthood? Well, you could do what Charisma Club did: write music about it! ‘That Feeling’ is exactly that, a nostalgic coming-of-age EP with tons of lovable imagery. Hailing from Auckland, Charisma Club have steadily been developing into an international sensation, and it’s clear that the group is ready to play their part on the global stage.
Diving into the EP reveals a treasure trove of slick indie anthems and epic emotive melodies. Starting from lead single ‘Your Love’, we make our way through the record’s five tracks, letting ourselves be impressed by Charisma Club’s kinetic charge and fuzzy guitar riffing. Vocals are absolutely excellent, at times reminding us of a young Matty Healy, among others. ‘Technophobe’ marks the EP’s most introspective moment, featuring a stripped, underwater arrangement that showcases all the sonic eclecticism hiding behind the New Zealand-based alt-pop outfit.
As we delve deeper into the songwriting ethos that propels ‘That Feeling’, we are told: “It’s an EP centred around themes of nostalgia, growing up, relationships, technology and finding a sense of place as circumstances change. The songs explore different aspects of early adulthood and relationships, including heartbreak, disconnection and the impact of technology on communication.” It all seems pretty attuned to the dystopian reality of our times; after all, Charisma Club is just like every young person in this world, trying to make it in a disfavourable and complex environment. Quite relatable, don’t you think?
