Hailing from Sydney, Cassy Judy is not only a talented songwriter and musician, but also a trans visibility trailblazer, a committed creative penning material that feels effortless and peculiar, yet reflective and layered. ‘Orchestra of Death’ is her latest effort, a folk-leaning piece that also features fellow talents Jewelz Hanssens and Lisa Hanssens.
‘Orchestra of Death’ is quite a clash of imagery and intent. Despite its ominous title, the track unfolds as a playful folk cut, one where gallows humour is used in a positive way, effectively tracing its steps among macabre lines and cathartic chants. Being that the song was written in a group, it features choir-like vocals, and it really does feel like an emotional release, a way to let go of deep fears and unprocessed grief.
From a lyrical standpoint, ‘Orchestra of Death’ emerges from highly collaborative settings, a songwriting workshop hosted by Judy herself at Jewelz Hanssens’ Cark It Cafe. The whole session focused on death and grief, as Cassy eloquently explains: “Jewelz and Lisa’s father passed away. Jewelz wanted to create a space where people could share experiences and have important conversations about death before it happened, including what music you want to listen to.”
