Caroline Romano Tries Vulnerability on Latest EP ‘How the Good Girls Die’

We wrote about Caroline Romano rather extensively in the past few months. For a very good reason: the American songstress was getting ready to release a stunning EP, ‘How the Good Girls Die’, a record that’s now out in the wild, ready to drench our day in evocative, vivid pop nuggets and relatable lyricism.

‘How the Good Girls Die’ is also the EP’s title track. It perfectly represents Romano’s overarching artistry, with a stream of heartwarming, poignant piano and cinematic textures providing the perfect backdrop for Caroline’s cathartic, intimate vocals. Those are qualities common to the whole EP, also packing what we’d define as ‘anthemic melancholia’.

Written from a truly personal perspective, the record reflects on growth and Romano’s experience as a young woman in our complex, overly social world. As she so eloquently explains: “This EP is about chasing pretty things and tripping over your own dress while trying to catch them. It’s what I know about shapeshifting, parties, hunger, and vodka. It’s swimming pools, disco balls, bruises, and bar bathrooms. It’s feeling both young and old, breaking hearts, and having your own heart shattered into a thousand pieces.”

It’s not all doom and gloom though, with ‘Body Bag’ and ‘Pretty Boys’ providing a fiercer, punchier listening experience. The contrast between euphoric, catchy pop gems and buoyant, minimal pieces is often found throughout the record. A musically-powered roller-coaster which seems to simply mirror life, with its whirlwind of experiences and moods.
