If you are wondering, yes, we did form an opinion on Caring Less. Their no-frills character is what does it; leaving behind useless production embellishment, the Philadelphia-based outfit finds a homely refuge in a minimal and nostalgic power trio formula, a solution that works incredibly well. Their latest EP, ‘Whatever You Want’, is vibrant, expressive and raw, with Sara Johnson’s sharp, fiery vocals being propped up by her guitars in overdrive, a functional bass (Ryan Acito) and solid drums (Nicholas Kreh).
That’s it. It starts and ends there, and despite the obvious sonic limits the group subjugates itself to, the final result is enticing, emotional and cathartic. Truly, it doesn’t happen every day to come across such a talented band. ‘Whatever You Want’ is a treasure trove of indie-rock goodness. From haunting, unapologetic opener ‘This is Worse Than I Thought’, to the catchy and slick ‘Drowning’, passing through past singles ‘So Sick’ and ‘Slow Down’, which, in our opinion, are the best episodes in the EP.
From a songwriting standpoint, Caring Less take an introspective path into romanticism and relationship troubles. As they explain: “We wrote the songs on the “Whatever You Want” EP together to capture the tensions of love and loss that we’ve experienced individually and collectively through our mid-20’s; we brought these songs to the Philadelphia recording institution Headroom Studios to help us continue evolving our soulful and dreamy rock and roll sound.”
