Usually, when we receive music this good, it’s backed by big labels and prominent marketing operations. In this case, though, Cargo G defies our expectations, unleashing an R&B-flavoured pop masterpiece that sounds intense, transformative and incredibly cathartic, ‘Chrome heart’. Marking a definite step-up from her previous EP, ‘Pressure’, the Houston-based songstress returns today with an evocative, intimate and meaningful slow-burner, a slice of understated, luscious vocals on top of cinematic textures and poignant harmonies.
It’s a formula that fits Cargo G very well. Often seen around R&B and soulful territories, the Texan creative now embraces a wider pop character, a livery that greatly enriches the impact of her vocals. You see, ‘Chrome heart’ feels like a personal confession, a relatable moment of vulnerability and honesty, a chance to truly look inward into Cargo G’s prominent artistry. That’s perhaps why we perceive the record as heartwarming; it’s human and jagged.
Produced by John Allen Stephens and Cargo G herself, ‘Chrome heart’ develops slowly, first sussurrating in our ear soft lyricism and gentle piano tones. Then growing into a never-ending, melodious chorus, a section packed with melancholia, nostalgia and a rather bittersweet quality. Overall, this is a wonderful effort for the American talent; she’s the real deal.
