‘Big CrUsh En3rgY’ is a bit of an unexpected wonder from CAPYAC. Following up on the synth-pop richness of their previous releases, the likes of ‘Fly Forever’ and ‘Rye Bread’, the talented group now embraces a more laid-back, wholesome direction, drenching ‘Big CrUsh En3rgY’ in funky guitars, groovy drums and the sort of sonic authenticity that reminds us of British outfit Jungle, among others.
Active for the best part of a decade, CAPYAC finds their spiritual home across continents, with friends and experiences spread across Berlin, Austin and Los Angeles. They have always sounded unlike anyone else in the industry, not slaves to a particular genre or scene, instead enjoying a melting pot of synth-pop, new wave, funk, and electronic music. The common element is good vibes and hypnotic melodies, a formula that seems to have worked rather well so far. In that sense, ‘Big CrUsh En3rgY’ is even bolder, with its soulful, jazz-flavoured arrangement and the addition of live drums.
Delving deeper into the creative ethos that propels the song, vocalist and guitarist Eric Peana explains: “As it stands, there are roughly ten versions of this song on our hard drive. At some point we decided to try live drums, leading to a remarkable moment where our collaborator Harry Terrell recorded drums while receiving oral sex from [redacted] for three and a half hours. In another marathon session, Obie and Delwin decided to delete 90% of the parts, replacing them with the horny undertones of a vast Irish bog- an alternate version we may release one day.” While we appreciate the playfulness of their statement, we urge the reader to take it as a psychedelic example of what one might find in their music… another dimension, really.
