Canary Complex Returns with Visual Kei Offering ‘BEL ESPRIT’

Packed with baroque orchestration, romanticism, and an elegant gothic atmosphere, ‘BEL ESPRIT’ takes us right back at the epicenter of Japanese visual kei culture.

The keen reader will gladly remember Canary Complex from an article we published last year, praising ‘A Whisper of Spring’ as “an eclectic, leftfield and evocative blend of indie rock, French chanson and veiled progressive rock”. That description rings true to this day, as the Brooklyn-based creative unveils their follow-up episode, ‘BEL ESPRIT’. In it, we familiarise ourselves once again with the Japanese visual kei scene.

Behind the Canary Complex moniker, we find Canary Kasey, talented musician and songwriter with an intense love and affinity for visual kei culture. Bathing in a world-building exercise they call ‘The Imaginary Paris’, Kasey has built a fictional universe packed with hypnotic tones and dreamy imagery, receiving support from Japanese visual kei media including VISUNAVI Japan, club Zy., and Vijuttoke, among others.

Delving deeper into the authentic visual kei ethos that propels the song, we are told: “It continues Canary Kasey’s exploration of visual kei through baroque orchestration, romanticism, gothic atmosphere, chanson, and the soft colours of impressionism.” We appreciate Canary Complex’s dedication to the visual kei cause, as they develop a project that feels peculiar, elegant, and so very cathartic. Crucially, they are also set to perform as a live guitarist for Japanese kei sensation KAMIJO on their forthcoming New York show.
