Canadian duo Wotts Deals with Heartbreak in Vibrant Single ‘terminal’

Further embracing their shape-shifting character, Canadian duo Wotts have recently returned with ‘terminal’, a vibrant, groovy piece that pays homage to the group’s hip-hop roots. After having successfully explored indie and psych-infused territories as well as brief synth-pop incursions, Wotts land on a shared formula that’s eclectic and wholesome, certainly lenient on indie-pop sensibilities with a kaleidoscopic, R&B-flavoured production. ‘terminal’ follows up on the project’s latest EP, ‘FLANK’, released back in July.

Given Wotts’ overall high productivity, the keen listener won’t be surprised to learn there’s another EP in the works, ‘COPE’. In it, we can appreciate the Ottawa-based duo’s lyrical authenticity. Dealing with the end of a romantic relationship, Wotts strive for a path forward while managing the inevitable pains and emotional blues. This is the overarching theme in ‘COPE’, a record that doesn’t offer clear answers, but that can function as a helpful, understanding companion.

As Jayem explains: “We’ve probably all been there, that blurry feeling after something ends. If you’re lucky, it’s a clean break, but if you aren’t, the messiness can linger on. When we were making this song, I kept picturing an airport, you go through the motions to get through things, but in the end, you just have to sit around for a long time before you can get to the next spot”.
