Caleb L’Etoile Unleashes Striking, Honest Album ‘American Death’

It happened. Caleb L’Etoile released his new album. ‘American Death’ is quite intriguing and bittersweet; if, from a sonic perspective, it’s a positive effort, with a fiery, fuzzy indie sound that’s energetic and rebellious, from a lyrical standpoint the references are gloomier and darker. Drawing inspiration from the current political landscape around him (especially in his native US), Caleb crafts a record that’s contemporary and striking, a sort of live reaction to anything catching his attention.

We wrote about ‘AW HELL’ earlier this month, celebrating the project as “the living example of how a solitary bedroom art-pop project can bloom into something much bigger”. In that sense, ‘American Death’ confirms that idea and widens it, with a constant stream of alt-folk, pop and rock highlighting witty storytelling and anthemic melodies. It’s a legendary album, in a way, a bittersweet snippet of our troubled times.

Speaking more in depth about the record, Caleb L’Etoile explains: “The goal of the album was to make a ‘living’ album where I would build it as I go, release the songs as I write them. I knew I felt a need to speak up in relation to recent events, but they were still unfolding, so an open-ended album aimed to be the right approach.” Featuring 12 episodes, ‘American Death’ is an emotional roller coaster, a slice of pure, honest lyricism that well resembles the volatility of our times.
