The history behind ‘Rogue Oligarch’ is rather fascinating, even more so when it comes to the way it interacts with Brudini’s overarching project. You see, the London-based creative and songwriter struck sonic gold first in 2020, with the song being released as an obscure B-side. It then laid dormant for years, especially with Brudini taking a long hiatus from the music scene. Finally, at a gig back in March, ‘Rogue Oligarch’ was included in the playlist, with the talented artist finally realising the piece’s hidden potential, certainly helped by the audience’s euphoric reaction.
To be fair, such forays into old material are nothing new, sometimes it is hard for a creator to judge the true scale of their endevours (self-sabotage and all that). Brudini has certainly felt inspired again, with ‘Rogue Oligarch’ anticipating a welcome comeback album set to be released later this year. From a sonic standpoint, the track is interesting and hypnotising, steeped in gloomy post-rock and melancholic new-wave.
Recorded in Istanbul, the record benefits from trumpet player Taskin Akarsu and trombonist Baris Dogukan, giving ‘Rogue Oligarch’ an eclectic, wider set of references, even entering jazz-rock and fusion territories. Brudini’s earthy, dynamic vocals are packed with gravitas and charisma, further extending the single’s already hypnotising atmosphere.
Look out for Brudini’s upcoming album ‘Vanishing Point’.
