It’s been a long time coming, but ‘Mystery of the Self’ is finally here. The new album by American troubadour Brother Barnaby, the record finds its unmistakable character in an eclectic and playful blend of old school pop, alt-folk and light rock elements. Evoking the elegant and nuanced musicianship of Paul Simon and the euphoric power-pop of a daring Brian Wilson, ‘Mystery of the Self’ is a joy to listen to. We’d go as far as calling it a timeless album, simply because it doesn’t pursue modern trends or fading formulas. It’s instead steeped in 50 years of great American tradition (and the occasional Portuguese and world-inspired bits).
Brother Barnaby’s first release since 2019, the new album sounds and appears as a well-thought-out body of work. A computer science expert by day, Sonny George is the human behind the project; it’s obvious how he never really stopped writing music, accumulating material and shaping it as he went along. The result is impressive, and for everyone to admire in ‘Mystery of the Self’.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the record, Brother Barnaby explains: “It’s a soundtrack for warm moments and fond memories. This is an ideal summer album if you’re feeling low and in need of something uplifting, positive, and full of charm.” Plenty of times to test that out this summer, although to be fair, it’s just a wonderful offering for all seasons, with its nuanced and quirky instrumental arrangements and varied character.
