We first came across rising country-pop star Brooke Moriber back in May, celebrating ‘I Still Need You’ as a “poignant, evocative effort”. We stand by our words; it turns out that elegance and class are foundational qualities of the New York-based songstress. Boasting a successful past as a Broadway talent, Moriber has now fully embraced her solo career, so much so that she’s reached out to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Little Anthony, paying homage to his timeless hit ‘Hurt So Bad’ with a stunning duet between her and the American icon.
As one would expect, the result of such a collaboration is absolutely glorious, and we’d dare say that we are observing Brooke Moriber at her best. Her voice is made for such wholesome and emotional material. Delivering perfect melodies and charming lyricism, she fully captures the listener’s attention, rising to the occasion. It’s not easy to match Little Anthony’s legendary musical flair, yet somehow Moriber makes it work, a sign that she’s the real deal. She’s here to stay.
Produced by Fred Mollins, ‘Hurt So Bad’ is developed into a conversational piece, with Little Anthony and Brooke Moriber exchanging timeless lines with full involvement and extreme pathos. What more could we ask for? ‘Hurt So Bad’ is simply a graceful, wonderful record.
