If there’s one thing that Britain will never have a shortage of, it’s rock bands. The nation holds a peculiar passion for anything tied to an electric guitar and melodic, expressive vocals, a tradition that seems to be continuing generation after generation. Julia are part of that very same movement, a new Birmingham-based outfit with a knack for bold indie and alt-rock influences. Their debut EP ‘Round The Corner’ has recently seen the light of day, a record that acts as an intriguing musical manifesto of the talented group.
Marking a pivotal year for Will Bickle, Charlie Brunt, Elliot Turner, and Zac Kavanagh, ‘Round The Corner’ features four electrifying episodes, all sporting slightly different characters, yet finding a creative refuge under a global umbrella. ‘Healing’ opens the record with a highly melodic and nostalgic flair, followed up by the more explosive and intense cut ‘Welfare’. ‘I’m Still There’ feels anthemic and inevitable, especially thanks to the massive, dark guitar riffs. That said, it’s also tender at times, the perfect balance between poignancy and urgency.
‘Crave’ closes the EP in acoustic fashion, a piece that lets us appreciate Julia’s honest and introspective storytelling, as well as their quaint confidence and modern flair. The band themselves are particularly eager to develop their career in the music industry, and they appear to be ready to fight for it. As we are told: “There’s a real excitement for what lies ahead”.
