‘Distracted’ is an interesting record. On the surface, the piece appears playful and bright, boasting an uplifting pop-lenient arrangement that’s sunny and sparkly. Yet, at a deeper look, the lyrical layer unfurls into a deep reflection on the chaotic state of the world, especially when it comes to technology and the many ways it affects our livelihoods. Behind such a striking offering, we find Wisconsin-based creative Brandon Frizzell, here offering heartwarming, meaningful vocals on a bed of sunny acoustic guitars.
The American songwriter was inspired by recent events, in particular the killing of American political figure Charlie Kirk and the various, often extreme commentary around it. Seeking to remind everyone about the gravity of a young man’s death, Frizzell draws a stark parallel between an increasingly polarised reality and the role of social media and technology in it. Essentially, though, ‘Distracted’ can be seen as a call to humanity, a reminder to look each other in the eyes, be patient, and practice deep understanding.
Recorded in pure DIY fashion, the single was a rather impromptu composition for Brandon, an act of acute inspiration and committed artistry. Delving deeper into the ethos behind the piece, Frizzell explains: “It’s a modern reflection on how technology and constant connectivity are quietly eroding REAL human connection. It speaks to a generation glued to screens but longing for something real.”
