A short yet hard-hitting effort, ‘A Maybe Mind’ is the latest offering from British troubadour Blake Baker. Following up on last year’s ‘Sundown’, the new single reminds us of the great qualities possessed by the Heartfordshire-based creative. You see, Baker is particularly excellent at easy listening material, playful indie-pop pieces, nuggets of playful euphoria and carefree lyricism. Yet, there’s often a tinge of reflection in it, something that we can fully pick up in ‘A Maybe Mind’.
Drawing inspiration from the twitchy and intense world of OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), Blake pens a record that’s uplifting on the surface yet wholesome and intricate in its deepest corners. The indie-pop production is the perfect evidence of it, with a rather simple and layered arrangement shifting between sections quickly and with a heightened funk character, establishing a parallel with OCD’s fast-paced behaviours.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, Baker explains: “A funk-infused indie banger, ‘A Maybe Mind’ is a bold anthem that delves into themes of OCD, anxiety, and indecision. I actually heard the chord progression in a dream! Waking up at 3am, I quickly rushed to my guitar to work out the chords, and subsequently added lyrics focused on the theme of being imprisoned in your own thought cycles through OCD and anxiety, which resonated with me, and hopefully will with others too.”
