Cooped up in a sunless, obscure bunker in the Hamburg underground, Blackbird Rebellion have been working on their euphoric, vibrant rock character since 2020. The German group have now reached their fifth EP, and things are better than ever. Boasting a lush, polished sonic livery and an engaging, uplifting flair, ‘Expedient Means’ is the result of enlightened musical research and continuous rehearsals, allowing Blackbird Rebellion to evolve and reach new heights.
Of course, they had help along the way. Dennis Rux from Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Studios steeped the album in vintage fuzziness and analogue fashion. Yet, the record wouldn’t have helped without Andreas Klingberg, Niclas Schwartau, Roland Fries, Ingo Juerss, and Jonas Danker’s full commitment. If you really think about it, a bunker is a fitting place to spend time in these perilous and gloomy times. Music provides a fiery soundtrack.
In fact, the lyricism behind ‘Expedient Means’ greatly benefits from Blackbird Rebellion’s deep reflections, often mirrored from a seemingly new world order – as well as informed introspection. As they explain: “The songs explore the inevitability of transience, the fragility of relationships, the fear of fear itself, and the many ugly faces of current despotism.”
