This record is not your average offering; far from seeking any mainstream glory, ‘After The Rain’ is more of a listening experience, a nuanced, cathartic nugget of escapism and aural goodness served on a gold-plated alt-folk livery. Even then, we find Bjéar’s folk material rather unique and sui generis, greatly influenced by ambient textures and cinematic arrangements.
Known by day as Brae McKee, the South Australian creative delves deep into songwriting and production with wondrous courage, collecting the four soothing episodes we can now admire in ‘After The Rain’. Bjéar’s vocals are absolutely immersive, sharing a luscious, elegant tone that often rallies into heavenly harmonic clusters. The EP should be approached with gentle, lovable interest and overall patience.
Delving deeper into the lyricism behind the record, Bjéar explains: “It’s about losing hope and finding hope, maybe even relocating the origin of your hope. It’s about mourning. It’s about patterns we live out. And it’s about the connection all of those ideas have with weather, water, wind, sunshine, spring, and how essential it can all end up feeling when it’s looked at through that lens.”
