Anticipating her long-awaited sophomore album ‘Dragonfly’ – out May 30th via Acrophase Records – Ava McCoy is eager to offer us a taste of what’s to come, sharing the record’s title track as an impressive showcase of her artistry. Taken at face value, ‘Dragonfly’ (the single) is incredibly detailed and wholesome, packed with a tapestry of acoustic tones, soft percussions and heartwarming vocal harmonies. McCoy’s elegant, luscious tone is to die for, truly hypnotising and cathartic.
A personal effort, ‘Dragonfly’ sees Ava looking inward with nostalgic acceptance, recognising painful experiences that took some time to fully be understood. The song was written after a summer spent with a lover in her childhood home; finding a dead dragonfly in the kitchen sparked a moment of reckoning. As she explains: “At that time in my life, I wasn’t eating, and I was the smallest I had ever been. I went to the doctor weekly out of concern for my well-being, but I was being praised by the person I loved for the drastic changes in my body.”
McCoy continues: “‘Dragonfly’ is a song about seeing yourself through someone else’s gaze, until you don’t recognise who you are, and about reclaiming that gaze for yourself.”
