We have written about British songstress and sonic explorer AUNCE a fair bit recently. From the truly poignant and evocative ‘Silver Sun’ to nugget of cathartic glory ‘Evergreen’, everything points towards deep inspiration and a serious desire to push aural boundaries forward. The London-based creative is uniquely placed in that sense, as she’s proficient both in production and songwriting, allowing her to craft organic, three-dimensional pieces that exist in a space of their own.
‘Zoo Friend’ is AUNCE’s latest effort, a slice of cinematic euphoria and leftfield goodness. A tad more intense and gloomy than its predecessors, the record develops its striking aural identity as it goes along, eventually exploding into an all-out, hazy and haunting outro. AUNCE’s vocals are used very intelligently, sampled into a never-ending soundscapes, a smorgasbord of frequencies that makes us transcend into space – are we entering heaven? Is this how it feels to experience zero gravity?
Such depth is fully mirrored in the song’s lyrical outlook, delving once again into introspective territories. The British talent explains: “It explores two feelings that have quietly shaped me for as long as I can remember. The first is a deep sense of connection with non-human beings — animals, plants, landscapes — and the joy that comes when others feel it too. But the song also holds grief — for how often that connection is dismissed.”
