Ask Carol found a like-minded audience back in 2023, when ‘Desert’ revealed itself as the piece that would go on to connect with people out there, and become one of the Norwegian group’s greatest achievements. Dreaming of the American Southwest and its vast, open plains, Ask Carol threads the fine line between feverish indie folk and eclectic dream pop, yet with a touch of nostalgic rock flair, at least when it comes to their fuzzy, spacious guitars and sharp, nuanced vocals.
Building on the success behind ‘Desert’, Ask Carol are now back with a larger body of work, ‘AC II: Desert Sky’, a follow-up to their 2022 album ‘AC I: Control You’. Since then, a lot has changed for the Oslo-based creatives. Enjoying a string of intense touring between the US and Europe, the group has certainly found its stride, a bold, fearless and unique character that’s fully on display in ‘AC: Desert Sky’. We appreciate its luscious, hypnotic and ethereal flair; Ask Carol makes good use of cinematic textures and evocative melodies, achieving a sonic imprint that’s the perfect meeting point between leftfield dream pop and gloomy Americana.
Speaking about the ethos behind their hit ‘Desert’, Ask Carol explains: “After playing at SXSW in Austin in 2023, we did a road trip around the Southwest of the US, where we played music out in the wild, many different places. A big part of this road trip was through the vast, magnificent open desert landscapes. It was our first trip after Covid, and these beautiful open areas gave us a great feeling of freedom and possibility. This is what inspired our song Desert. This is also where the Desert Jam series started.”
