For the uninitiated, Annika Bellamy might not be a familiar name, yet chances are you have come across a very famous record also performed by his uncle, Tony Bellamy, from the notable American rock group Redbone. Dominating charts in the 70s with their hit ‘Come and Get Your Love’, the group has been a fixture of popular culture since then. Now, Annika seeks to pay a heartfelt homage to her late uncle by repurposing that very same hit in a modern sauce. She also enlists the help of another Redbone hero, guitarist and founding member Pat Vegas.
Anyway, let’s focus on Annika Bellamy for a second; music is obviously in her DNA. Having released a bunch of records in the past few years, the American songstress has showcased a great deal of lyrical expertise, alongside a vocal tone that’s incredibly luscious and memorable. That’s all on display in the ‘Come and Get Your Love’ cover, here treated in a pop-rock rework that still borrows a lot from the original, effectively paying its respect to the version we all know.
Marking his first appearance in a cover version of the track, Pat Vegas is a welcome guest on the record, effectively drawing a line between the old generation and the new one, and also remembering Annika’s uncle Tony. As the American songstress explains, “It’s the song that defined a generation and a galaxy. Now, for the first time, Redbone’s Pat Vegas passes the torch.”
