As always, collaboration appears to be the winning move. When talented people get together to write music, good things happen. Usually, there’s always a person who guides such an effort, a visionary who takes charge of the artistic direction. In the case of Animal Souls, the leader is producer and bassist Michael Fisher. Hailing from Abbotsford, British Columbia (CA), the talented musician manages to rally a group of fellow creatives around him, penning an eclectic, striking album, ‘Moondancing’.
In it, we enjoy a deceptively good listening experience. Touching on classic rock, glamorous AOR and pop tones, and an overall sense of lusciousness, ‘Moondancing’ is especially anthemic, with catchy, relatable melodies delivered by evocative female vocals (from a variety of guests) and polite guitars. The record is at times quite cinematic (‘Midnight Sky’), at times more soulful-flavoured (the sax solo in ‘Between the Lines’). A healthy amount of electronic pads helps the album feel warmer and harmonically richer.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the record, Fisher explains: “It feels like a lifetime of work… I’m very proud of the artistry on this album”. We are proud too, especially given such a kaleidoscopic, vibrant tracklist and the people involved. As a project, Animal Souls has proven to be invaluable, especially when it comes to taking a peek into musicians from BC’s Fraser Valley; there’s certainly a great deal of music inspiration down there!
