Even’s latest offering celebrated both approaches. ‘Wannabe Woke-Foe’ embarks on a fierce rebellion against techno-feudalism and AI slop, here seen as the culprit for the digital chaos affecting our reality. It’s a complex and dark record, one that interprets the contemporary landscape through a series of cryptic lyrics and fringe sound design choices.
Introduced by what first appears as white noise, ‘Wannabe Woke-Foe’ slowly morph into a horse-coded gallop, evoking the idea of a popular rebellion within a fantasy medieval aesthetic. Once Ani Even’s morphed and mangled vocals enter the picture, the record blooms into a hyper-experimental effort, further blooming into what Ani playfully calls ‘Templar Techno’. Echoing the futuristic yet gloomy electronic soundscape of Trent Reznor, alongside the industrial dance fervour of a young Gesaffelstein, Ani Even pens a true standout, a hypnotic and gritty single that’s bound to have a profound impact on the listener.
Reiterating the powerful message behind the single, the Copenhagen-based creative explains: “It’s a call-to-arms against techno-feudalism, AI-slop and the destruction of meaningful interactions online, hinting at an outward-facing perspective on the foes of falseness, impostors and greedy-ass-billionaires trying to suck the soul out of every piece of digital art.” Given the turmoil in our modern world, it’s easy to see a large swathe of keen listeners fully relating to the project’s purposeful ethos.
