It’s been a while since we heard from Andrew Schneider. Precisely, since March 2025, when we celebrated the project’s previous single ‘Pleasant Thoughts’ as “a classic pop-rock anthem with an ingenious new wave component”. Today, the Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist returns with ‘Astonish Me’, a wonderfully layered offering that truly showcases all of Andrew’s heightened eclecticism. In it, we find the same retro new wave and rock grit, but also a nuanced orchestral counterpoint that’s partly elegant and partly melancholic.
One could argue that there’s also a hint of theatrical flavourings in the record, although such a conclusion would largely depend on personal influences. We’d recommend enjoying ‘Astonish Me’ at face value: a vibrant, complex pop tune with a wealth of lyrical wisdom and observant spirit. You see, Schneider doesn’t make music for the sake of it; rather, he moves with purpose and meaning. On this occasion, the single seeks to reflect on the decadence of our world, as we progressively get entangled in irresponsible leadership and failing social policies.
Delving deeper into the song, Schneider explains: “An urgent song for a turbulent era. Across business, politics, and culture, our leaders are embracing nihilism. Unfulfilled by wealth and privilege, and furious at not being recognised as our betters, they will degrade those beneath them until proper fealty is shown.”
