Branding themselves as ‘future dub from ancient Scotland’, eclectic and visionary outfit An Dannsa Dub confirm their nearly mythical status, doubling down on a truly kaleidoscopic musical recipe, highly unique and wholesome. ‘Through The Storm’ is the strongest evidence of that. The project’s latest album, it showcases everything that An Dannsa Dub has to offer, from intense, laidback dub explorations to traditional Scottish folk pieces, all wrapped in contemporary production and melodic flair. Reggae and Scottish trad together? That wasn’t on our cards!
Yet, An Dannsa Dub shows us the way with charisma and elegance. Standing as ‘The Dub Dance’ in Gaelic, the group enjoys a strongly collaborative character, inviting a plethora of vocalists and instrumentalists alongside regular songstress Josie Duncan. Her vocals give the album a beautifully ethereal, experimental flair, one that helps widen the listening experience. ‘Kick Up The Dust’ comes to mind: a spiritual, folk-flavoured anthem with a hauntingly intense Dub production.
Led by Tom Spirals and Euan McLaughlin, An Dannsa Dub call Glasgow their home, effectively bathing in Scotland’s long-standing and cathartic history, deeply intertwined with legendary folk tales and dramatic storytelling. Dub pioneer and legend Gaudi also has an important role in producing ‘Through The Storm’, giving the record a deeper layer of wisdom and dub-oriented authenticity.
An Dannsa Dub is now gearing up for a 21-date UK tour this month. Tickets can be found here.
