Slow-paced, luscious and cathartic, ‘Yembela’ is exactly what we would expect from Amunaso. Moving with purpose and eclecticism, the Brussels-based songstress has been active in the international music scene for a few years, firstly focusing on an afro/zouk vibe, then reaching out to R&B and soul influences, all genres working well with her Congolese roots. ‘Yembela’ pays homage to those roots, meaning ‘sing’ in Lingala.
Navigating sultry, slow-jam territories, ‘Yembela’ showcases Amunaso’s nuanced artistry, boasting incredibly elegant and evocative vocals, also capable of bundling into angelic, buoyant harmonies when needed. The single follows up from ‘Protected’, another slice of gentle euphoria by the talented creative. Overall, there’s a sense of newly-found aura in the two songs, sparking what we suspect will be a period of musical renaissance in Amunaso’s three-dimensional career.
Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Yembela’, she explains: I had already decided I wanted to release ‘Yembela’, but I wanted to record it with the band instead. In August 2024, Nathan, my guitarist, suggested we try a slow-jam kind of drum pattern. We tried it. I liked it. It felt more intimate and emotive.
