Americana Talent John McDonough Releases New Gem ‘Shooting Star’

Now residents in Chicago, John McDonough has been known internationally for his intense and evocative brand of Americana, marked by inspired storytelling and his gritty, raw vocals. We are quite glad to have discovered him, not only for his refined musical output but also for his story. A mature artist (although we don’t like the definition), he has been walking stages for over 25 years, creating a personal musical style that from his Texan motherland brought him to Chicago, where he is now fully focused on his artistic endeavours. His latest release ‘Shooting Star’ is perhaps a clear example of his songwriting prowess, navigating haunting, slightly dark guitars while recalling the legendary tale of Joe Rantz and The Washington Husky rowing team, and their win at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

Taken from McDonough’s latest EP ‘We’ll Answer the Call’, ‘Shooting Star’ represents perhaps the finest moments of the record, empowering the listeners to have faith in themselves, and “never stop looking at your shooting star”. This strong lyrical message is layered on top of McDonough’s poignant guitar arpeggios, soon joined by a full arrangement featuring light drums, acoustic piano and a sea of vocal harmonies, further affirming the American talent style and class.

Overall, a convincing release from McDonough, who once again confirms himself as one of the most interesting Americana newcomers on the scene.
