The keen reader will gladly remember Italian, London-based creative Alessia Piermarini from a feature we published back in April, praising Zagani Lullaby as “the quintessence of an aural chiaroscuro, a haunting encounter between lullaby-esque melodies and a strikingly melancholic mood.” If, on that instance, we met Piermarini shrouded in orchestral flair, her brand new single ‘BPM’ recenters the project into a more contemporary, free-form shape.
‘BPM’ echoes the same spoken-word allure that Piermarini showcased in previous effort ’10 Miles’, as well as the project’s DIY electronic ethos. Performed live on a loop station, ‘BPM’ is layered and hypnotic, with Alessia’s nuanced harmonies providing a tender harmonic counterpoint to the song’s kinetic, hip-hop-esque beat. The Italian songstress’ attempt at rapping is equally impressive, and it unveils a joyful, luscious listening experience that’s bound to put a smile on anyone’s face.
From a lyrical standpoint, the song hides a rather playful attitude with a much more meaningful resolve, facilitating a conversation about the uniqueness and diversity of identities and personalities. Alessia is adamant about the need to stay true to oneself, refusing to wear a mask or to adapt to somebody else’s rhythm. As Piermarini eloquently explains: “Like a fingerprint, everyone has their own rhythm, vibe and BPM. There is no such thing as being too fast or too slow; we simply move at our own personal and unique pace.”
