Icelandic songstress Aldís Fjóla has been featured on Mesmerized before, both in her rock-leaning, fierce persona and in her more tender, evocative acoustic iteration. In fact, back in 2023, we did write about ‘Quiet the Storm’, an acoustic, poignant cut that saw Fjóla teaming up with frequent collaborator Halldór Svensson. Fast forward to today, and you’ll find us praising the Icelandic pair yet again, as they dive into their complex and nuanced ethereal universe. ‘Breathe’ is exactly that: a slice of sonic elegance guided by Fjóla and Svensson’s rich artistry.
With the former taking care of its lyricism, and the latter guiding the compositional effort, ‘Breathe’ starts with the most magical piano melody, constantly building in intensity and cinematic allure. Eventually, the piano deeply intertwines with the melancholic violins. Both instruments are performed by Halldór himself, here showcasing his far-reaching musical expertise. Fjóla’s dreamy and hypnotic vocals take ‘Breathe’ to the next level, unveiling a highly meaningful songwriting layer.
Delving deeper into the song’s hidden lyricism, Fjóla and Sveinsson explain: “It´s about letting your people help you through, remember to breathe in our everyday struggles and remember that you have people in your corner.” We suspect that folks will greatly relate to it, especially at a time when the world seems to have forgotten about the value of community.
