Adai Song Decodes Chinese and Western Cultures in Latest Work ‘The Bloom Project’

There’s a reason ‘The Bloom Project’ has gained a candidacy at the Grammy® Awards for ‘Best Global Music Album’: simply, it’s an incredibly eclectic and wholesome collection of Chinese-influenced pop gems with a universal flair. Best described as C-Pop, the record marks the latest effort by Berklee Alumni Adai Song. Oscillating between New York City and Beijing, Adai is the perfect meeting point between Chinese and Western culture, a feature that greatly transpires in her nuanced, meaningful body of work.

Otherwise known as ADÀI for her forays into EDM territories, the talented songwriter, singer and producer packs ‘The Bloom Project’ with eight diverse and hypnotic pieces, all material that’s highly influenced by a feminist reinterpretation of Chinese ‘shidaiqu’, a fusion of Chinese Folk and Western jazz that first arose in the early 20th century. Boasting a bilingual lyrical ethos, ‘The Bloom Project jumps from evocative softness to electrifying electronica, showcasing once again the wide-ranging artistry enjoyed by Adai Song.

Delving deeper into the record, she explains: “It transforms historical Chinese musical traditions into contemporary anthems of female empowerment, addressing themes of cultural identity in a globalised world, feminist reinterpretation of traditional narratives, East-West musical fusion with modern electronic production, and cultural bridge-building through music.” That’s the key to understanding Adai; she’ not just creating music, she’s effectively decoding cultures and facilitating integration.
