sammy newyear explores the highs and lows of young love in ‘pink punk (special edition)’

Certainly relatable and introspective, ‘pink punk’ provides an observant, electrifying perspective on the emotional whirlwind of early adulthood.

It’s not that easy to attach sammy newyear to a single genre. In fact, the Tucson-based creative appears to be bathing in a wide cultural pool, jumping from fuzzy indie influences to alt-pop and electronica at a moment’s notice. The common denominator is a sound that feels fresh and contemporary, very George Clanton-esque, if you will. Self-produced by sammy newyear himself, ‘pink punk’ is the perfect evidence of it, a seven-track record that marks the project’s latest release.

One of our favourite tracks on the album is ‘L.A.’, a slow-burn, evocative piece built on a functional blend of industrial tones and hyperpop synths. It’s hypnotic and futuristic, and just the right amount of whimsy. sammy newyear’s vocals are rather convincing, here delivered with a surplus of charisma and carefree attitude. From a lyrical standpoint, ‘pink punk’ draws from the American artist’s own romantic experience in his twenties, especially when it comes to the highs and lows of attraction and relationships.

Delving deeper into the love-coded storytelling that propels the album, sammy newyear explains: “‘ur special’ was written about my boyfriend when we started dating 7 years ago and is a nostalgic trip through the feelings of falling in love. ‘problems’ explores the feelings of being in a one-sided relationship and acting as an unpaid therapist for your partner. This shows the range of songwriting on these themes of love.” Certainly relatable and introspective, ‘pink punk’ provides an observant, electrifying perspective on the emotional whirlwind of early adulthood.
