2026 marks a rather pivotal year for New Jersey-based troubadour Anthony Walker. Returning to recorded music after a five-year hiatus, the talented creative shared ‘Unstoppable’ back in September, followed by ‘Runways’ just a few days ago. There’s a new album on the horizon too, ‘The Wind & The Witness’, expected in early 2027. For now, we’d like to focus on ‘Runways’, a reflective and melancholic single steeped in folk and alt-country allure.
‘Runways’ particularly shines through its relatable and open-ended lyricism, with Walker exploring the ‘open road’ concept, imagery that’s borrowed directly from the great Americana and Folk tradition. On this occasion, Anthony reworks such mythology into a more universal and modern sense, focusing on the hidden features of a life spent in perpetual motion. For instance, the inability to build lasting connections and the sensation of constantly running away from anything or anyone that might tie us to a physical place.
Delving deeper into the meaningful ethos that propels ‘Runways’, we are told: “The song suggests that every path taken comes at the expense of another. Its emotional weight comes not from any singular event or defining turning point, but from the accumulation of smaller decisions. Each departure represents another life not lived, and somewhere along the way, the distinction between moving toward something and running away begins to disappear.”
