The keen reader will gladly remember German songstress Vüxin from a feature published just under a month ago, praising ‘Bumblebees’ as “a gentle, ukulele-powered indie-folk jewel”. Gearing up for an upcoming EP due on November 13th, the talented creative has recently unveiled a brand new single, ‘Maze of Fear’, a track that breaks with the delightful tenderness and bucolic twist of its predecessor, diving into a much more nuanced and sombre tone.
Highly intriguing and haunting, ‘Maze of Fear’ sees Vüxin craft a hypnotic, gloomy piece, a track that blooms on atmospheric indie-folk with a certain Americana flair. In fact, the German artist herself mentions how the song could very well be placed into a Tarantino movie, as well as the many links to the Wild West aesthetics, both from a songwriting and aural perspective. Vüxin’s vocals are luscious and mesmerising as always.
From a lyrical standpoint, ‘Maze of Fear’ uses the desert imagery to describe the push-and-pull of an attractive yet complex relationship, truly navigating the intense sensation of being trapped in a situation without any control. Yet, there’s a powerful ending to it all. As Vüxin explains: “It tells the story of an unhealthy relationship that feels like a long journey through the desert, yet a connection one simply cannot let go of for a long time. With the line ‘I found my way out of here’, however, there is ultimately a shift towards self-empowerment.”
