It may or may not be a coincidence that ‘Making Friends With My Demons’ has been released in the midst of Halloween season. Its overall allure is certainly dark and raw, with Brooklyn-based creative Alex Julia’s melancholic, commanding vocals kidnapping listeners into personal, reflective territories. Yet, the album is much more than a seasonal coincidence, in fact representing Julia’s biggest release to date, featuring twelve tracks including a couple of acoustic versions. Collaborator Patrick Wörner is on production duties, steering the record into darkwave, grunge and goth territories all the way from Germany.
From a lyrical perspective, ‘Making Friends With My Demons’ is built on introspection and escapism, providing a powerful tool for emotional processing and self-empowerment. That’s where the record’s gloomy allure emerges from: we follow Alex Julia as she navigates hard, confusing times, looking for a viable way out. Safe to say, she might have found that way out through the musical medium. We suspect that a fair amount of listeners out there will relate to such a striking storyline.
Delving deeper into the meaningful ethos that propels the album, Julia explains: “I was grieving the loss of my father. This album is about transformation. Overcoming abuse and trauma. Realising that I will never be the same person again and accepting it. Dancing with my demons, essentially. Fighting off the impulses, bad habits, and addiction. It’s about taking your power back. Learning how to be in control.”
