The keen reader might remember Judy Pearson from an article we published just over a year ago, praising ‘Afterthought’ as “finding its unmistakable relatable character in Pearson’s own experience, as it describes an ungrateful and toxic ex-lover”. That very same song was part of a broader EP that explores the tragic aftermath of a heartbreak. Recently, the London-based songstress has returned with ‘Diary of a Heartbreak (Chapter Two)’, the next step into Pearson’s emotional saga.
From a sonic standpoint, the EP unveils the sort of elegant, evocative cinematic pop that Pearson got us used to in ‘Chapter One’; gentle electronic textures, tender melodies and an overall heartwarming character that’s a joy to listen to. Very relatable, the EP feels much more hopeful and positive than its predecessor, as we observe Judy slowly reframing a painful heartbreak and finding the willingness to move past. The songwriter we meet in ‘Diary of a Heartbreak (Chapter Two)’ is a person who has arrived at the acceptance stage and has reclaimed her own power and energy.
Delving deeper into the meaningful ethos that guides the record, Pearson explains: “It is very personal to me, because it comes from a place of reflection rather than heartbreak itself. When I wrote the first chapter, I was expressing the hurt, confusion and disappointment that came with a relationship that didn’t turn out the way I’d hoped. But by the time I started writing Chapter Two, I’d pretty much moved on, and I could finally look back on everything with a clearer perspective.”
