‘Down’ could be described in a variety of ways, but we feel as though the word ‘delightful’ particularly resonates with the kind of timeless elegance that weaves in and out of the album. Of course, the sonic palette is quite eclectic, from the classical roots of ‘Epiphany’ to the title-track’s pop-rock punch. There’s something for everyone in it, and if we may suggest, it’s appropriate to approach the album with a certain calm, giving yourself time to digest the musical nuance Hearty has to offer.
We appreciate the album’s anchored and observant songwriting allure. Drawing from personal experience, Joe explores the highs and lows of the human experience, doing so with a certain playful flair, never truly descending into despair or melancholic territories. Instead, there’s a ton of elegant energy seeping through the ten tracks on the record, all nuggets of theatrical-pop wisdom and catchy melodism that are a joy to listen to.
Delving deeper into the creative ethos that propels the album, Hearty explains: “I recorded most of the record in late 2024-2025, between Liverpool, London and Athens with an additional session in Hydra. It was a year or so fraught with various life-altering events, so it took me a while to finish it. In many ways, I think finishing the record helped me fully digest what had happened – or at least gave me a compass to navigate the last couple of years.”
