A familiar face on our blog, British rocker Laura Musgrave has now unveiled her latest EP, ‘The Longest Time’, a record that we did, in fact, announce back in April, when writing about ‘Crumbs’. On that occasion, we proudly declared the project as “exuding a striking pop-punk allure that’s as sonically rewarding as it is lyrically meaningful.” We stand by our words, and in a sense, the EP is the continuation of that very same ethos.
Packed with five like-minded tracks, ‘The Longest Time’ embarks on an electrifying journey over nostalgic punk and alt-rock influences, in a way evoking the early noughties, as well as more contemporary influences. If, as we are told, Avril Lavigne has been a pivotal discovery in Musgrave’s development, then it’s easy to see how her music would seep through ‘The Longest Time’, which never settles on a particular formula, always playing around with different levels of intensity and pop resolve.
From a lyrical standpoint, Laura takes a hard look at romantic relationships, drawing from personal experience as well as from popular culture. She dissects the human thirst for connection and love with a certain playfulness, never descending into drama or meaningless reflections. Instead, she keeps the energy high and looks at the subject with a certain fierceness. After all, that’s what rock’n’roll is about.
