It’s been quite a pivotal year for EDISON, as the London-based troubadour made his debut with ‘Always on My Mind’ earlier this summer. He’s now following up with another nostalgic jewel, ‘Spread My Wings’. Only, EDISON is not a newcomer to the music industry. In fact, he’s been playing the game at the highest level. Known as Mike Evans by day, the talented songwriter was once the drummer for renowned British synth-pop outfit Citizens! EDISON is Evans’ new chapter, a chapter that finds a very different set of musical influences.
From a sonic standpoint, ‘Spread My Wings’ embraces a powerful retro outlook, taking listeners back in time to the 70s, doing so with chamber-pop tenderness and piano-induced pop charisma. It really is a luscious offering, rich in its production, but never overbuilt, and always focused on EDISON’s wholesome and heartwarming vocals. As a bonus, the track also ships with two alternate versions: a stripped-back piano and vocal, and a standalone string arrangement by Olivia Holland, performed by Chrysler Strings.
Delving deeper into the meaningful ethos that propels the song, we are told: “At its heart it’s a song of self-reflection, about reaching a turning point and choosing to stop hiding, to live more openly and honestly.” One word that comes to mind when describing ‘Spread My Wings’ as a whole is elegance, the sort of elegance that’s timeless and effortless. For that, EDISON gains our highest praise, as he clearly knows what he’s getting into, and he’s doing it well.
