We love seeing bands come back after a long hiatus. We have had many instances of such happening in the past few years, but today it’s a rather special occasion, as we welcome British band The Race on their return to the airwaves. Based out of Reading, The Race enjoyed a roaring career in the mid-noughties, performing across the UK and Europe, and even being included in recorded sessions for BBC Radio 1, BBC Music and XFM.
Enough history; earlier this year, The Race released their comeback piece ‘Best Is Yet To Come’, and are now following it up with a four-track EP, ‘FAMILY’. In it, we find all of the previously released singles as well as a brand new one, ‘Where You Go I Go’. From a music standpoint, the record stays pretty authentic to the group’s early days, if only tinged a bit more with evocative melodies and spacious, shoegaze-like tones.
The Race are not the indie-loving youngsters they once were. They have families; they are living a pretty adult life. This gives them a new perspective on the project’s lyricism, now focusing on “the people closest to them: old friends, ageing parents, children growing up, and the difficult balance between holding on and letting go.” We suspect that ‘FAMILY’ will relate to a lot of forty-somethings out there, perhaps catching them reminiscing about the good old times. No worries though; the present is what really counts, and The Race still possess the musical sheen that once conquered global audiences.
