The keen reader might remember American rapper Milo Kobayashi from a feature we published last year, praising ‘THINK!’ as “a deep reflection about self-growth and success, all tinged with playful and fiery vibes”. This is the sort of dualism that can often be found in Kobayashi’s music, with bold production serving as an aural facade for more intentional and purposeful lyricism. ‘Metamorphosis’ remains true to that ethos, while widening its overall influences.
Marking Milo’s latest effort, the EP sees him teaming up with Chef Zay on the production. As part of Charlotte-based collective The Batch, Kobayashi and Zay worked together towards a common goal. Compared to earlier material, ‘Metamorphosis’ feels a tad more nostalgic and traditional, especially in its sonic palette. It’s the perfect balance between contemporary imagery and old-school allure. Milo’s vocals are always on point, with a confident, charming flow that always punches above its weight.
Delving deeper into the creative outlook that propels the EP, Kobayashi explains: “This is my favourite body of work so far. It’s literally the best songs in the world to me. I normally used to get sick of hearing my own songs after a while, but this one is different. ‘Bufo Spit’ lowkey changed my life, and ‘Frog shiii~’ is one of my favourite chillout songs when I’m just doing chores around the crib.”
