Melancholic and gloomy, ‘An Immigrant’s Story’ unfolds as a dramatic theme steeped in historical relevance and cinematic allure. Delivering an evocative listening experience, the piece marks the latest offering by Italian musician Gianfranco Malorgio, here teaming up with Moreno Viglione on production duties. ‘An Immigrant’s Story’ blends electric guitar and gentle synth tones.
An experienced guitarist and talented composer, Gianfranco Malorgio is a notable name in the Italian music scene, with a strong background as a performer and a keen love for Django Reinhardt. Such appreciation would go on to evolve into a tribute group, Hot Club Roma, now also including Italian actor Giorgio Tirabassi. Recently, Malorgio has been focusing on composing material for soundtracks, an endeavour that also gave birth to ‘An Immigrant’s Story’.
Delving deeper into the meaningful historical ethos that propels the track, we are told: “The piece pays tribute to Italian emigration, a massive movement of people that, from 1861 to the present day, has seen over 30 million Italians leave their homeland, resulting in a global population of approximately 60 to 80 million people of Italian descent.” Malorgio uses such a poignant theme to reflect on heritage and migration, then wraps it all into a wonderful musical exploration.
