Ria Timkin Pursues Her Dreams in ‘Favourite Child’ EP

Oscillating between epic cinematic pop and more conventional alt-pop cuts, ‘Favourite Child’ then blooms into an emotional roller-coaster, a journey through the highs and lows of pursuing one’s dream.

It’s quite an exciting time in Ria Timkin‘s burgeoning career. She’s right in the middle of a UK and Irish tour, with upcoming dates in Dublin and Belfast, and she’s also recently unveiled a stunning EP, ‘Favourite Child’, a five-track record that showcases all of the imaginative pop allure the talented songstress has to offer. The new release was recorded and co-produced with Tom Wilding at Wildingsounds in Bristol.

We appreciate how the EP manages to be so varied in moods and sonic themes. Oscillating between epic cinematic pop and more conventional alt-pop cuts, ‘Favourite Child’ then blooms into an emotional roller-coaster, a journey through the highs and lows of pursuing one’s dream. In that sense, Ria approaches the subject with honesty and authenticity, knowing full well that growing into the person you want to be is not necessarily an easy, linear process.

Delving deeper into the lyrical ethos that propels the EP, Timkin explains: “‘Favourite Child’ EP is an exploration of the different facets of pursuing your dreams. I chose the title deliberately because it has an almost self-assured feel to it, but when you listen to the EP, you realise that ‘favourite child’ has a very different meaning in the context of these songs. It’s not about thinking you’re the favourite, but about fighting for your place in the world, desperately seeking approval, and ultimately coming into your own.”
