‘I Wanna Be Your Ex’ marks Noam Peri‘s latest effort, her first release of the year. Following up on previous single ‘Poison’, the new record sees Peri back with a new, shiny sonic livery and fiercer lyrical approach. In that sense, we are big fans of the kaleidoscopic production (courtesy of Guy Schwartz), constantly oscillating between spacious guitar tones and synth-powered charisma.
The record is tuned very specifically to Peri’s own experiences in Los Angeles; in particular, Noam recalls a complicated and somewhat toxic friendship with a girl, a situationship that was full of push-and-pull, tension and release, so to speak. From what we hear in ‘I Wanna Be Your Ex’, it is clear that the talented songstress eventually looks for a way out, seeking balance and stability in a messy relationship. The record mirrors such a contrast, even in aural terms, with a bubbly and dreamy indie-rock production providing a fitting counterpoint to the seriousness of the songwriting.
Delving deeper into the personal and meaningful lyricism that propels the song, Peri explains: “The relationship was filled with intense arguments, mixed signals, and constant upheaval. I wanted to create a contrast with this song—something that feels like an upbeat, driving party on the outside, but carries the raw disappointment and the urge to just break everything down on the inside.” Goal accomplished: ‘I Wanna Be Your Ex’ is both introspective and gently bright.
